The Football Association plays a huge role in supporting grassroots football, and for this project, we were asked to film a new series celebrating the incredible contribution of volunteers. The journey took us across the country—starting at Boro Rangers FC in Middlesbrough, then Marine AFC in Liverpool, and finally Horsham FC in Sussex.

Football has always been a passion of mine. I’ve spent the past 10 years working with non-league clubs, so I know just how vital volunteers are in keeping them alive. Their dedication goes beyond matchdays; they’re the heartbeat of these clubs. This was a fast-paced shoot, with only a few hours at each location to capture interviews, B-roll, and drone footage. I love shoots like this, where you have to think on your feet and adapt to whatever comes your way.

Preparation was key. In a setting where you can’t control the lighting or the environment, you have to focus on what really matters—great audio and strong visuals. I kept a simple shot list on my phone, ticking things off as we went to stay on track. Sport is unique because once it starts, it won’t stop for you. You must be ready, anticipate the moments, and capture them asthey happen.

This series was designed as a visual podcast for YouTube, where people could watch and listen to the stories of those who give so much to the game. For me, that meant keeping the production straightforward but effective—two cameras, crystal-clear audio, and a focus on the real, human stories. The best content isn’t always about complexity; it’s about connection. When you get that right, everything else falls into place.
